My name is Khethelo Makhaye, and my story begins in the small village of Stepmore, Underberg. Growing up in a rural area, I always had big dreams—not just for myself, but for my community. I knew that if I wanted to create opportunities, I had to step out and chase them first.
I moved to Pietermaritzburg in search of greener pastures, carrying nothing but ambition and a passion for beauty. In 2018, I started my business from a small flat, transforming it into a space where I could offer hair and beauty services. It wasn’t easy, but every client, every challenge, and every late night fueled my determination.
By June 2019, I took a leap of faith and opened my own salon—completely by myself. It was a proud and terrifying moment, but I knew I was on the right path. I never looked back.
Of course, the journey hasn’t been smooth. One of my biggest challenges was training professionals to uphold the high standards I envisioned for my business. Then came COVID-19, a time of uncertainty that tested my resilience. But through it all, I kept pushing forward, knowing that setbacks were just setups for comebacks.
My vision goes beyond running a successful salon. I want to give back. One day, I will open a beauty school in my village, creating opportunities for young people who, like me, dream of something more. I believe that beauty is more than just hair and makeup it’s about confidence, empowerment, and transformation.
Today, Bendalo Spa & Beauty is more than a business. It’s a symbol of perseverance, passion, and purpose. And this is just the beginning.
